Student Support
Vibrant, brilliant and diverse – these words encompass St John’s students. We are justifiably proud of our undergraduate students, and of our thriving graduate community.
St John’s has taken a strong lead in supporting its students:
- For our undergraduates, we are participating in the University-wide Oxford Opportunity Bursary scheme and have increased the number of special grants including hardship, book, travel and vacation grants.
- For our graduates, we are funding a number of schemes including the Lamb & Flag Scholarships that offer full support.
- We have built the Kendrew Quadrangle, with 70 new student rooms. All students can now benefit from living in College. A room in College is a major financial advantage to our students and a boost for collegiate life, but is not inexpensive to provide.
- We spend over £1 million on support for students annually.
Alumni and Fellows have also contributed by funding a number of Graduate Scholarships through their donations to the 450 Fund.
Despite these measures, a number of students are still caught in a poverty trap, even after family contributions, and many leave with substantial debt. For our graduates, outside funding has become even more difficult to obtain and many of our finalists who want to go on to graduate study cannot afford to do so.
With your support, we can help more students - find out more about the Oxford Thinking Campaign. We hope you will join us in working toward our goal that all able students, regardless of background, needs and means, should be able to attend St John’s without having their time at College clouded with worry about finances or leave with incapacitating debts.
