Tutorial System and Fellowships

St John’s is one of the strongest champions of the Oxford tutorial and has dedicated itself to offering the widest subject range in Oxford.

To maintain our success we must face up to the following challenges:

  • Over the last 30 years, there has been a significant erosion of state funding for University teaching.
  • The University of Oxford’s own financial constraints mean it increasingly cannot afford to pay its traditional share of the cost of our teaching Fellows.
  • Government funding increasingly prioritises research over teaching and, in response, the University has reduced the tutorial teaching load of new academics.
  • Rising international competition has driven up the cost of attracting and retaining outstanding academics.
  • Between now and 2012 a quarter of our Tutorial Fellows will have retired without automatic funding for their replacements.

We are addressing these challenges through the creation of a number of new Supernumerary Teaching Fellowships for promising new academics. These posts comprise four years of teaching and one of research/career development and attract excellent tutors and help ensure our students continue to receive the finest education.

However, these new posts are costly and we cannot afford to fund as many as we need in the near future. Alumni can make a real difference in this area. Your gift in support of the Tutorial System and Fellowships, will help ensure we continue to offer the same high standards of teaching that you experienced at St John’s.
