St John's Fellow wins the Balzan Prize for Literature

Wednesday 09 Sep 2009

We are delighted to announce that Professor Terence Cave, Emeritus Research Fellow and former Tutor in French at St John's, has won the prestigious Balzan Prize.

The prize, worth one million Swiss francs, was given in recognition of his outstanding contributions to a new understanding of Renaissance literature and of the influence of Aristotelian poetics in modern European Literature.

The Balzan Prizes have been awarded since 1961 and their aim is to foster culture, the sciences and the most meritorious initiatives in the cause of humanity, peace and brotherhood among peoples throughout the world. In 2001, the Articles of the Balzan Foundation established a stipulation that prize winners must direct half of the prize to finance research projects that are preferably carried out by young scholars.

Past winners of the Balzan Prize include former President of St John's Richard Southern (1961 for Medieval History) and Honorary Fellow of St John's Martin West (2000 for Classical Antiquity).
