Funding Guidelines and Application Forms

There is a tripartite scheme of funding for St. John’s College Fellows.

  • 1a. Small grants of up to £4,000 for conferences, workshops and seminars; applications for seminars, conferences and workshops which include matched funding are preferred. The recommendation for approval of these grants is the responsibility of the Research Committee. Applications for these small grants may be made at any time and will be decided by circulation.
  • 1b. Small grants of up to £4,000 for research assistance and research projects. The recommendation for approval of these grants is the responsibility of the Research Committee. Applications for these small grants may be made at any time and will be decided by circulation.
  • 2. Grants between £4,000 and £20,000 for innovative research projects, preferably inter-disciplinary in nature, that do not fit easily into research council remits. These will be assessed by one external reviewer and the Research Committee. Before each meeting a nominated member of the Research Committee may be asked to be prepared to present a summary of the grant applications and reviews. Applications may be made twice a year with the closing dates of 1 October and 1 April.
  • 3. Grants for funding over £20,000 but not more than £45,000, which also should be for innovative research projects, preferably inter-disciplinary in nature, that do not fit easily into research council remits. These will be assessed by three external reviewers and the Research Committee. Before each meeting, one or two nominated members of the Research Committee may be asked if they are prepared to lead the discussion of these grant applications. Applications may be made twice a year with the closing dates of 1 October and 1 April.

Applications should be submitted using the electronic application forms:

In assessing applications the Research Committee will take into account previous awards from College, the use of College research expenses and the extent to which external funding has been or should be sought.

Applications for large grants (over £20K) are not accepted from Members of the Research Committee. They may wish to step down from the Committee should they wish to make such an application.

All recommendations for awards are subject to agreement by the Governing Body.
