Name: Rosanna Le Voir

Year in College: Second
Home Town: Dulwich, London
Interests and Activities: Playing sport and keeping fit is something I really enjoy and value. I have played University hockey now for two years, as well as organised the College hockey and water-polo teams, represented the College in rounders, and rowed in Summer Eights this term. I am also passionate about travelling and meeting people from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds. As such, I work hard to earn and save money that has allowed me in the past to travel extensively in Asia and Central America, as well as to New Zealand and different parts of Africa. Two of my most interesting and rewarding trips have involved volunteer work, namely working at a Children’s Home in Kathmandu, and teaching English in Sichuan, China, both for six weeks each. This is something I hope to pursue further after University, ultimately by taking part in a long-term program such as Volunteer Services Overseas.
Career Aspirations: My main interest lies in International Development and Global Health. After leaving University, I want to travel further, before studying for a Masters on related issues. At some point in my life I also definitely want to live and work overseas. As such, the combination of these factors means that working for the Foreign Office on domestic issues in developing countries, would ultimately be my ‘dream job’. Alternatively, I am also very interested in teaching.
Favourite thing about SJC: Although it is rare to come across a student who speaks negatively about their College, I genuinely believe that there is no better place to study and enjoy the best of undergraduate life, other than at St John’s. The strong academic focus of the College, together with its vibrant extra-curricular life, attracts the most able and interesting students from a whole plethora of backgrounds. In addition, the large student body of both undergraduates and post-graduates, together with the opportunity to live in College throughout your studies, contributes towards a tight, friendly student community. The generosity of the College is also greatly appreciated by the students, in the lower costs for accommodation and food, as well as rewarding Scholars and supporting those in financial difficulty. I have also been grateful to receive grants to help fund travel during the vacations, as well as assistance towards the costs of playing University sport. This generosity is indicative of the support and contribution provided by the College in helping to make life at Oxford as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible!
How can alumni support help the College? Undoubtedly, one of the most important ways that alumni can support the College is financially. As an undergraduate, the College’s generous financial and personal support gives us the best opportunity to be successful in all aspects of student life. This also affords us with a strong platform to strive to achieve our future aspirations beyond University. An excellent way to recognise and reward these opportunities is by donating to the College to support current and future students, and allow them the same opportunities as alumni received themselves. This is especially relevant to those less financially privileged, but just as talented, who may otherwise not be able to afford the University fees, particularly as a result of the recent fee increase. Moreover, support from alumni helps to maintain the prestige and tradition of the College in offering places to the most academically-able individuals, regardless of their financial situation. It is also great to see alumni at College-organised events, such as plays, supporting St John’s at large sporting events such as Summer Eights, as well as attending the College Ball.
