Middle Common Room

All graduate students are members of the Middle Common Room (MCR), which is the College's graduate student union and the hub for graduate social and academic life in St John's.

Facilities

In addition to other college facilities, MCR members have access to the main MCR building. It's used for many different activities, and comprises:

  • Large main room - used for various functions
  • Kitchen with oven, microwave, and dishwasher
  • Computer room and photocopier, both free to use
  • TV room, including a new 60" TV, Wii, PlayStation 3, and DVD player
  • Sports equipment for MCR members to use, and lockers for belongings
  • A games room which contains a pool table
  • A small seminar room

Activities

We have a wide range of activities going on, both in and out of term-time, including:

  • Black tie guests dinners twice a term
  • Lecture suppers twice a term - a graduate student makes a presentation, about either their research or their home country, to a general audience, followed by supper
  • Cultural trips, for example to Bath, London and Cambridge
  • Frequent social events such as bops, games nights, film nights and desserts
  • Other one-off events - everyone is encouraged to send their ideas - such as ice-skating, paintballing, whisky tasting....
  • While most sports teams are drawn from the whole college, the MCR has its own rowing crew, as well as a football and cricket team.
  • Wine tasting twice a term (jointly with the SCR)

MCR members are also welcome in the JCR and at its many activities.

The College's Graduate Freshers' Pack will provide you with all the information you will need before arriving at St John's as well as help guide you through your first days and weeks in Oxford. There are additional resources for graduate freshers, including the MCR's own Freshers' Guide, on the MCR website.
