Sir Michael Scholar

Sir Michael Scholar

Honorary Fellow

I was President of St John's College between 1 September 2001 and 31 July 2012. Before that I was Permanent Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry, and before that Permanent Secretary to the Welsh Office, after a civil service career in HM Treasury. I had previously been a Research Fellow at St John's College, Cambridge, and an assistant Lecturer in Philosophy at Leicester University.

My PhD thesis was on Aristotle's Metaphysics Z, which I approached through philosophical work following lines of enquiry suggested by John Wisdom and Elizabeth Anscombe on some of the issues discussed in Aristotle's text. I am currently a Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. I am also Chair of the UK Statistics Authority, which came into existence in April 2008.
