Professor Gerard van Gelder

Professor Gerard van Gelder
Laudian Professorial Fellow in Arabic
Teaching Interests
I teach classical Arabic literature (i.e. from c. 500 until 1800 AD) at the Oriental Institute. Regular courses include classical poetry, classical literary prose, and "Classical Arabic Unseen", reading texts ranging from dogmatics to jokes.
Research Interests
My interests lie particularly in the fields of classical Arabic poetry, poetics, stylistics, literary criticism, and the history of genres and themes, with a slight predilection for what might be termed "marginal" genres and themes. I am the executive editor of Middle Eastern Literatures, a journal founded in 1998 by colleagues including Dr Robin Ostle, retired Fellow of St John's.
Those who want to find out more should search under 'Geert Jan van Gelder', which is the name under which I publish.
