Teaching Interests

Austrian by birth, Israeli by descent, American by adoption and English by incorporation, I joined St John’s in 2011 after two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the European College of Liberal Arts in Berlin. I hold a BA in Literature and Philosophy from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, an MPhil in early modern literature from Oxford, and an MA and DPhil in Philosophical Theology, also from Oxford.

I teach all areas of systematic theology, including (for Prelims) the Doctrine of Creation (Paper 1), and (for FHS) Patristics (Paper 4), Medieval Theology (Paper 7), Modern Theology (Papers 9a, 9b and 10), and God, Christ and Salvation (Paper 5).

I supervise graduates in modern theology and philosophy, and particularly invite applications from graduates wishing to work (a) on 20th-century German philosophy in its relation to theology, (b) on modern doctrine, particularly eschatology and hamartiology, (c) C.S. Lewis and his intellectual circle, or (d) on Jewish Christianity.

Research Interests

My main research interest is an ongoing enquiry into the ontological, epistemological and anthropological implications of Christian eschatology. So far, this has yielded two strands of published research. The first are theological interactions with the philosophical traditions of Heidegger and Wittgenstein (including particularly Stanley Cavell); the second are engagements with literary expressions of eschatological expectation, particularly the late plays of Shakespeare and the novels of C.S. Lewis.

I am also General Editor of the Journal of Inklings Studies.
