Research Interests
In my research I specialise in the literature and cultural history of the Greek world in the Hellenistic and Imperial periods. My doctoral dissertation, which I am currently preparing for publication as a monograph, focused on the relationship between literature and popular culture by examining how the (largely elite) Greek authors and readers of the Roman Empire wrote and read about everyday life in the city. This project forms part of my wider interest in tracing what functions classical literature played in its ancient historical and social context. I have also worked on ancient translations of Greek literature, studying what the adaptations and transformations of a text tell us about its readers. My next research projects include a study of the relationship between Greek poetry and prose in the Roman Imperial period and a study on the narrative and ideological uses of the urban street in Greek literature more broadly.
Teaching Interests
I offer teaching on a range of Greek literature papers for Greats, as well as tutorials on Greek and Latin language and reading classes at various levels. I particularly enjoy the friendly tutorial culture of the College and the weekly conversations with students that cover a full range from textual detail to broader cultural context.
