Teaching Interests
I teach British and Irish History 1500-1700 for both the first year course (Prelims) and papers taken in the second and third years (Finals). For Prelims I also teach Approaches to History, General History 1400-1650, and an optional subject on witchcraft and witchhunting in early modern Europe. For Finals I teach Disciplines of History and a further subject on literature and politics in early modern England.
Research Interests
My research focuses on the religion, politics and literature of early modern England. I have a particular interest in late seventeenth-century religious nonconformity, and I am currently investigating the uses dissenters made of historical writing in polemical debates. I have published on Restoration poetry, co-authored an article on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew in its historical context, and sought to explain how early modern literature can be read historically.
