Teaching Interests

I am responsible for teaching Physical Geography at St John’s College. This includes Prelims Earth System Processes, with sections on geomorphology, ecology and climatology and Final Honours School Earth System Dynamics, with sections on past and present climate dynamics and modern process studies. I also teach aspects of Prelims Geographical Techniques (Quantitative) and Final Honours School Environmental Geography and Geographical Research papers.

In the Geography department, I contribute to teaching in the Quaternary Science and Desert Landscapes special papers for Final Honours School, and lead the Physical Geography Research Classes for the Physical Geography part of the Geographical Research paper, and assist with the Tenerife Fieldclass.

Research Interests

My research interests span long-term Quaternary-scale environmental and climatic change in dyland environments, geochronology (luminescence dating, Uranium-series dating and tephrachronology) and short-term records of environmental change that lie at the interface of human-environmental interactions.

I am undertaking research through the RGS Thesiger-Oman International Fellowship into groundwater recharge in south-east Namibia, using the record of salt in sand dunes that relates to the movement of water through dunes to groundwater.

I also conduct research into past environmental dynamics in southern Africa, and the contribution of luminescence dating to the understanding of the Quaternary environments of the Namib Desert.

Other Information

I am also a Stipendiary College Lecturer in Physical Geography at Keble College.
