How to Apply

Applying to Oxford

Application to an undergraduate course at the University of Oxford takes place between 1 September and 15 October each year, for places beginning the following Autumn. To apply you must complete a UCAS form.

Applying to St John's

UCAS Form

  • Institution code name “OXF”
  • Institution code “033”
  • Campus code “S”

You can choose to select a college of preference on your application forms or to make an ‘Open' application, where a college is selected for you. Have a look around this website to discover what St John's has to offer.

Application Guidelines

We are happy to accept applications from students studying for A2, the International Baccalaureate or any equivalent qualifications. If you are predicted AAA or higher at A2 or 39-40 or higher (including the bonus points) in the IB, then you are in position to make a competitive application. If you are applying with non-UK qualifications please check the International Qualifications page on the Oxford University website.

For some subjects you will be asked to submit copies of written work and/or sit a test. Find out more about application requirements on the Courses page on the Oxford University website.

Written Work

We ask that the written work be marked by your teacher in the normal way and not be specially prepared. We would also ask the following:

  • Please check the written work requirements for your subject on the Oxford University website.
  • Please remember to keep a copy for your reference.
  • Please be aware that we will need to photocopy your work, so please ensure that it is SINGLE SIDED and NOT fastened with staples.
  • Please make sure that you send it to us using the correct amount of postage or it may be significantly delayed. We would recommend the use of protected postal services such as ‘Special Delivery’.

When we have received an application we will consider your GCSE and AS achievements (or their equivalent) and your predicted grades. However, we are interested in potential as well as achievement, so don't feel you must have perfect grades to make an application. If you have good grades and a strong personal statement and reference on your UCAS form and a good pre-interview test score (where appropriate), we will invite you for an interview in December. By Christmas, you should know whether or not we wish to make you an offer. We are happy to receive international applications. Note that non-native speakers of English must meet the University's English language requirements. Find out about language requirements on the Oxford University website.
