More about Computer Science at St John's

  • Computer science is a young discipline at St John's, and benefits from being a small subject in which students receive a great deal of individual attention. Emphasis is placed on principles and problem solving rather than specific software technology.
  • Our students take advantage of third- and fourth-year projects to put their creative abilities to the test, often with great success.  In 2006, for example, a chess playing program by student Alan Dowling was the only one to beat grandmaster Peter Wells in a simultaneous exhibition.
  • Computer science students at St John's enjoy close ties with mathematics students, with whom they often share subject dinners.
  • Our graduates move on to successful careers in the IT industry, management consultancy, and banking, as well as working towards research degrees.

Computer Science and Philosophy

St John’s is pleased to announce that from October 2012 we will be offering the new Computer Science and Philosophy Joint degree. For further details please go to the Computer Science and Philosophy page on the Oxford University website.
