Health and Safety

Health

St John's College takes seriously matters relating to student health. There are a number of officers within the College, and professionals outside the College, such as the College Nurse, the College Doctor, and the College Counsellor, who can give advice about health matters.

The College is a no-smoking zone, except in such areas where smoking is permitted and where a sign to that effect is posted.

The College has a bar and also runs the Lamb and Flag pub.  Student and College organised events often include the provision of alcohol. Alcohol should always be consumed in moderation; drunken misbehaviour and drink-induced vandalism will incur disciplinary measures. If students find that they regularly drink excessive amounts of alcohol, they are advised to seek professional help.

The use of drugs, or the provision of drugs for the use of others, is illegal and will not be tolerated in College. Serious offences are likely to be referred to the police and to the University authorities.

Safety

Behaviour which is likely to cause a danger to an individual's own safety, or to the safety of others, such as climbing on any part of the College fabric, including the College roof, or throwing items out of windows, is a disciplinary offence. Students must not enter areas where workers are undertaking any repairs, construction, decorating, or building works of any kind anywhere in any College property. No explosives, including fireworks, are allowed in College, except as part of a professionally-organised firework display.

The College provides attack alarms for use outside College. These are available from the Porters' Lodge on request and free of charge.  These can be replaced or refilled at the Lodge.  Most College rooms have door chains, but if a room does not and a student would like one, they should ask at the Domestic Office or Clerk of Works.

Fire Safety

Fires are an obvious hazard to life and property, and the College is determined both to prevent their happening and to minimize the damage if they occur.  The intelligent cooperation of every member of, and visitor to, all parts of the College and all College property, is essential and compulsory.

In brief, all students must obey these rules:

(a) Smoking is only permitted in a designated smoking area. Smoking of any kind [cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs or shishas etc.] is strictly forbidden indoors, as are candles, joss-sticks, or any other similar item. [This list is not exhaustive.]

(b) Cooking is not permitted anywhere except in kitchens; this prohibition includes microwave ovens, grills, toasters and kettles.

(c) All students are expected to read the Fire Instructions posted in any room they enter, and do what they say.   [Note that they may differ from place to place.]

(d) Tampering with or letting off fire extinguishers is a serious offence and will attract an automatic and substantial fine.
