Stipendiary Lecturership in Geography

The College intends to appoint a stipendiary lecturer in Geography for the period 1 October - 30 June 2013. This is a temporary, fixed-term position created to provide substitute teaching during a Tutor’s research leave.

The successful candidate will be required to teach up to six hours undergraduate tutorials per week during the academic terms. Further details of the undergraduate course in Geography are available on the Geography Faculty's website. The lecturer will be qualified to teach human geography and will be expected to share responsibility for administrative and pastoral duties for undergraduate students at the College.  Candidates should have, or expect to have completed by 1st October 2012, a doctorate in Geography (applications will be accepted from doctoral candidates who have successfully been examined but not yet had their degree conferred).

The salary will be £13,789 for the period of the appointment (subject to revision in line with any general salary increases). Full dining rights throughout the period of appointment will be offered. A teaching room will be provided and a research allowance is also available.

Visiting Research Centre Associate Scheme

The Research Centre welcomes applications from academic members of staff in universities other than Oxford who wish to spend a period of sabbatical leave in Oxford. Applications for periods of between three and twelve months are welcome and will be considered at the relevant meeting of the Research Centre Management Committee (mid October and mid February). Applications in the form of a letter outlining the work to be undertaken in Oxford and enclosing a C.V. should be addressed to Professor Linda McDowell, Director of the Research Centre, St John's College, Oxford OX1 3JP. The conditions of the association are listed below:

  • There shall be no more than two associates at any one time, whose tenure is approved by the Governing Body on the recommendation of the Research Centre Management Committee.
  • Association is for a period not longer than 12 months, nor shorter than three months.
  • A Visiting Associate must organise or give a seminar in the Research Centre during each term of association.
  • The support of the Research Centre must be acknowledged in any publications emerging from research undertaken in Oxford.
  • The Associate is eligible for a room or share of a room in the Research Centre, and the same dining rights as other Research Centre Associates, but no salary, research allowance or residential accommodation, other than a request to be considered should accommodation become available during vacation periods.
  • The scheme is competitive; appointment may be made from a field of applicants, either gathered by advertisement or on the recommendation of members of the Governing Body, provided that the Management Committee shall take a continuing overview of all appointments to ensure that an open and uniformly competitive process of appointment is maintained.
