Teaching Interests
My teaching centres around political philosophy and the history of political thought. I teach the following papers: for Prelims, "Theorizing the Democratic State"; for Finals, "Theory of Politics", "Political Thought: Plato to Rousseau", "Political Thought: Bentham to Weber", "Marx and Marxism", and "Post-Kantian Philosophy".
Research Interests
I work primarily on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century political philosophy. Thus far, my research has focused on Hegel and Marx, comparing their views on freedom, capitalism and the state. I am about to begin a project on progress and providence in the Scottish Enlightenment. I also conduct research in contemporary moral and political philosophy, particularly with regard to freedom and self-actualisation; organic conceptions of society; and perfectionism and the good life.
Other Information
I came to Oxford in 1999 from a state school in Glasgow. I read PPE at Corpus Christi College, followed by an MPhil in Political Theory and then doctoral research. In 2007 I was appointed College Lecturer in Politics at Brasenose College, Oxford. Then, in October 2008, I joined St John's as the first Andrew Fraser Junior Research Fellow in Political Philosophy. I am also a Member of the Centre for the Study of Social Justice at the Department of Politics and International Relations, Oxford.
