How to find your network adapter's machine address (mac address)

Windows 95, 98 and ME


Click on start, then run and type "winipcfg" and press OK
A program is started, in the drop down box select your network card. (it will NOT be the PPP adapter) look for the adapter address, this is the machine address, it will look something like 00-20-AF-BE-F0-C3.

Windows 2000, NT, XP and Vista


Click start, then run, then type "cmd" and press enter. In the window that appears type "ipconfig -all" and press return. (note the space between ipconfig and -all").
You will then get a list of settings.
Look for the physical address for your Ethernet adapter, this is the machine address; it will look something like 00-20-AF-BE-F0-C3.  If you cannot see a physical address for your network card you may need to connect an ethernet cable  to the ethernet port of your computer to bring it out of a power saving mode.

Mac OS 7.6x - 9.x

Go to the Apple Menu and select "Control Panels".
From the list of control panels, select "TCP/IP".
The TCP/IP control panel window will appear. At the top of the box, there will be a "Connect via:" drop-down list box. Select "Ethernet" from this list box.
Go to the "File" menu.
Select "Get Info".
Look for the field labeled "Hardware Address". It will have 12 characters that look something like: "00 05 9A A0 60. 94". This is your Ethernet card's machine address.

Mac OS X

Click on the apple icon.
Click on “about this mac”.
On the about this mac window click on the “more info…” button.
You will now have a window with full details about your mac.
From the contents list click on “Network” this will display details of your network settings.
If you have OS 10.4 or above click on “built-in ethernet” from the list of active services
Scroll through the settings and look for the Ethernet MAC address. It will have a 12 digit number that looks like: “00:05:9A:A0:60;94”. This is your Ethernet Card Address.
