Disability Support
Accommodation
The college owns several rooms that are specially adapted for disabled students. These are all located within the college grounds or on nearby Museum Road. Facilities available include specially adapted en suite and kitchen facilities and fixtures and fittings designed for blind or partially sighted students.
Funds for Special Equipment
The Higby Bequest provides generous funding for blind and partially sighted students at St John's. The college is also able to provide equipment, where appropriate, to allow every student to make the most of the academic resources available at Oxford.
Special arrangements for Library loans
Our library staff are always willing to help those with any difficulty accessing library material. Unfortunately we are unable to make all of our historic buildings accessible to wheelchair users. Recent investments in stair-climbing machines do, however, allow access to the ground floor of the library. Our librarians will ensure delivery of books to students who cannot consult them in the library itself. Any student with concerns about accessing books should contact Mrs Catherine Hilliard 277 330 who will be happy to discuss their individual needs.
Arrangements for examinations
If students need practical help with, or extra time for, examinations because of a disability or a chronic medical condition (for example, if it would be impossible for a student to sit examinations in the Examination Schools, or if a candidate needed to use a computer for examinations), the Academic Administrator can liaise with the appropriate college and university bodies in order to seek permission for, and organise, the required special provision.
