College rooms have an ethernet connection. If you have a suitable computer, it can be connected to the College network to provide access to the Internet.

Please note that there are rules governing the use of this connection - please download our Network Access Rules. Also read the University and OUCS Rules for Computer Use

Network Access

If you have your own suitable computer (Windows XP or later, Mac OS 10.5 or later) and it is in working order, it can be connected to the college network, providing access to the Internet, email, telnet and other such services.

St John’s College uses an automated registration system called Bradford Campus Manager to connect to the college network. Plug your computer in to an ethernet port in your room, and when you open a web page you will automatically be redirected to the registration web pages. You must complete the registration process before you can get online. Simply follow the on-screen instructions.

You will need to enter your Single Sign On credentials (the same as you use for email) via our authentication server james.sjc.ox.ac.uk.

This will register your computer and take you on to the next stage on the Bradford Campus Manager server called eeyore.sjc.ox.ac.uk.

Once you have verified your credentials your computer will then be switched into a new area where you will be asked to download the Bradford Dissolvable Agent (BDA) application. This application checks your computer against our agreed network security policies. This ensures that your computer meets the minimum security level required for access to this Network. It is a requirement that users must scan their computers in order to verify that your computer meets the network security policies.

Once completed you will be able to connect to the internet.

For computers without an Ethernet socket we can lend you a USB adapter to make a connection for a deposit of £20. Please contact the IT office for details.

Wireless

Many of the communal areas of college such as the libraries, cafe, main teaching rooms, auditorium and bar have wireless networking. The system used is the Oxford standard 'OWL' wireless. The international Eduroam standard is also provided. There are instructions on how to connect to both systems here. Students are reminded that running their own wireless network is not permitted under University wireless rules.
