College Lecturer in Roman History
The appointment is available for the period 1st October 2025 – 30th September 2026. This is a temporary, fixed-term position created to provide substitute teaching during a Tutor’s period of sabbatical leave and will therefore not be extended or renewed.
Ancient History in St John’s
St John’s typically admits between 7-10 undergraduates each year to read for degrees which include the study of Ancient History: 4 in Literae Humaniores (Classics), 2 in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, 1 or 2 in Ancient and Modern History, and up to 3 in joint schools involving Classics (Classics and Asian and Middle Easter Studies, Classics and Modern Languages). In recent years, the College has been one of the top colleges in Oxford for applications in both Classics and CAAH. St John’s has an active outreach programme in Classics, including the annual Classics and Ancient History Essay Competition.
The postholders in Classics include Tutorial Fellow in Classics (Dr Emma Greensmith), Tutorial Fellow in Ancient History (Dr Georgy Kantor), Lecturer in Classical Languages (Dr Matthew Hosty), Associate Lecturer in Ancient Philosophy (Dr Marion Durand) and Assistant Lecturer in Classical Archaeology (Mr Peter Thompson).
Remuneration and benefits
The salary will be 1.0FTE of point 1 of the University scale, grade 7, currently £36,924 p.a. plus a pensionable £1,500 per annum Oxford University Weighting payment which will be paid in equal monthly instalments and pro-rated for part time appointments. This salary is dependent on experience and qualifications, this figure will be adjusted to the equivalent of university scale point 1, grade 6 for candidates who do not hold a doctorate.
