St John’s College intends to offer up to six Visiting Scholarships during mid-July to mid-September 2025

The scheme for Visiting Scholars aims to facilitate visits from senior academics from other universities and institutions to enable them to carry out research in Oxford for up to six weeks during the summer vacation.

Visiting Researcher scheme

The Scholarships are open to any tenured academic postholder and are intended to support the holders in a current programme of personal research. The successful applicants will be able to use the libraries of the University of Oxford, for example, the Bodleian and its associated libraries and the Taylor Institution Library.

The College will provide accommodation (single student room with a shared bathroom). Lunch and dinner will be provided and may be taken in the Senior Common Room, of which the Visiting Scholar will be made a temporary member; breakfast is available in the Main Hall. The College is unable to offer facilities (including accommodation) to spouses, partners or family members, even for short periods.

The following criteria will be taken into account when considering applications:

  • Track record of the Applicant.
  • Merit of proposed research and amount of work that might be accomplished during the visit.
  • Whether Oxford libraries and facilities are specifically required for the proposed research.
  • Ease of access to Oxford facilities normally enjoyed by the Applicant.
  • How recently the Applicant has had access to Oxford facilities, via this scheme or otherwise.

Application deadline

5.00 pm Friday 17 January 2025 (Friday of Week 0 of Hilary Term)
