Workshop: Prehistoric Megasites in Ukraine
- Date 5 November 2026 - 10.00 a.m. - 6 November 2026 - 4.00 p.m.
- Location New Seminar Room, St John's College
Ukraine has some of the largest prehistoric megasites in the world. These sites, which in some cases extended over several hundred or even thousands of hectares, are becoming increasingly important in international discussions on early urbanism at a global scale. The Ukrainian megasites developed mainly in the 4th millennium BCE, with the famous Trypillia sites, and then again in the 1st millennium BCE, during the so-called ‘Scythian’ period. This workshop brings together a range of colleagues from Ukraine, the UK, and other European countries in order to discuss recent research and future approaches. The workshop is part of a project carried out by Prof Manuel Fernández-Götz (Oxford) and Dr Oleh Bilynskyi (Kyiv) within the framework of the UK–Ukraine University Twinning Initiative, coordinated by the Cormack Consultancy Group.
