Professor Gillian Rose elected to a Fellowship
Professor Rose (BA Camb, PhD Lond) has been appointed to the Professorship of Human Geography in the School of Geography and the Environment with effect from 1 October 2017. She is currently Professor of Cultural Geography at the Open University and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2015.
Her research interests lie
broadly within the field of visual culture, with recent projects focusing on
digital technologies in cities. She comments, 'I
approach images of all kinds by thinking of them as objects embedded in a wide
range of social practices. What really interests me is not so much
the content of an image as what happens when someone does something with
it, whether that's putting it in a frame on their mantelpiece, uploading it to
a social media website, or glancing at it on a public screen in a
city square.'
We look forward to welcoming Professor Rose next year.
