Professor Wilferd Madelung FBA

Emeritus Fellow and former Laudian Professor of Arabic (1978–98), Professor Wilferd Madelung FBA was pre-eminent in the study of Islamic history and civilization. With an in-depth knowledge of the Arabic language and the Islamic world, Professor Madelung's expertise ranged across history, theology, philosophy, philology and manuscripts.

Before joining St John’s, he was Professor of Islamic History at the University of Chicago (1961–78). In 2013 he was awarded the Farabi International Award by the Iranian Ministry of Islamic Guidance and Culture for his very significant contributions to the fields of Islamic and Iranian studies.
