An exhibition of works by British figurative artists exploring the interfaces between image-making and language.
  • Date 20 January 2026 - 2 February 2026
  • Location Kendrew Barn Gallery

Story Painters, Picture Writers borrows its title from Aubrey Beardsley’s 1894 polemic against the narrative conventions of 19th century academic art – a tongue-in-cheek appropriation given the story-telling thread that ties the show together.

Painting has its own complex language independent of words and literature but there are areas of image-making that are contiguous or close to language. History painting or illustration could serve as examples. The artists exhibited here, in distinct and individual ways, all explore certain areas of proximity between image and language, picture and narrative, while being fully aware of painting’s autonomy.
