Soweto Kinch presents a bespoke solo performance blending jazz, hip hop and spoken word, with original new music built from sample packs and East African music.
  • Date 5 November 2025 - 7.30 p.m.
  • Location Garden Quad Auditorium, St John's College

St John's is delighted to welcome the alto-saxophonist and MC, Soweto Kinch, for an evening of jazz, hip hop and spoken word. Based on recordings by the Tanzania's Msindaba Jazz Band, Taarab folk music and new works by Soweto, it’s a meeting of musical worlds connected by improvisation and technology. Performing with saxophones, the Roland SP404 drum machine, and a digital woodwind instrument called an Aerophone it brings ancient sounds together with jazz and cutting edge sampling to create something profoundly new.

Soweto is one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians in Britain. He has won two MOBO awards and been nominated for the Mercury Prize. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Hertford College, Oxford, where he read Modern History.

This performance is free to attend, but advance registration for tickets is essential.
