About Enrico:
Tanzanian musician and music producer Enrico Figueiredo has been instrumental in the performance and recording of Tanzanian popular music, from rumba to hip hop over the last 40 years. Enrico was the lead guitarist in the InAfrika Band which performs, and records music influenced by Cuban music and Congolese rumba. In the late 1990s Enrico began producing hip hop and played a central role in the emergence of a local hip hop scene in the 1990s. Since 1994 Enrico has been the producer and manager of the influential Sound Crafters one of the oldest studios still operating music studios in the Temeke District of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Sound Crafters has been instrumental in creating, recording and preserving a whole range of musical genres in Tanzania.

About the workshops:
In these workshops Enrico will situate contemporary musical sound sampling practices within a longer history of popular music in Tanzania. Before coming to St John’s, Enrico recorded and shared a collection of sound samples from the Msindaba Jazz Band. These sample packs were shared will communities of hip hop producers in the UK. The sharing of samples has enabled a space for musical conversation across form, genre and geographical boundaries. In these workshops, Enrico will share his own current practices of sound sampling and how these are shaping new expressions of the contemporary genre singeli. In the spirit of collaboration and musical conversation, we welcome participants bringing their own musical projects to the workshop.
