Daron Acemoğlu Presented with 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics
Professor Acemoğlu shares the award with Professor James A Robinson (MIT) and Oxford alumnus, Professor Simon Johnson (Corpus Christi College, PPE, 1984). Their research demonstrates the importance of societal institutions for a country’s prosperity, examining why societies with a poor rule of law and institutions that exploit the population do not generate growth or change for the better.

The award ceremony for the Nobel Prizes in Economic Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature took place at Konserthuset Stockholm (Stockholm Concert Hall) on 10 December – the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. As is traditional, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on the same date in Oslo.

In Trinity Term 2024, Professor Acemoğlu was awarded the Sanjaya Lall Visiting Professorship of Business and Development at the University of Oxford. The Professorship, created in 2011 to honour the memory and academic legacy of St John's alumnus, Professor Sanjaya Lall (1940-2005; PPE, 1960), has been associated with St John's since the 2023/24 academic year. Professor Acemoğlu delivered the the Sanjaya Lall Memorial Lecture in May 2024. In this lecture, Professor Acemoğlu challenged the idea that technological advancements lead naturally to greater prosperity and better lives.
