Victoria Coren Mitchell (1991, English Language and Literature) returned to St John’s on the 9th November for an informal talk with her former tutor, Emeritus Professor John Kelly, as part of our In Conversation with….. series.

Sharing memories of her time at the College, she fondly recalled his pivotal role in her university education, and how her study of the narrative structure of novels whilst a student had influenced her playing strategy during her time as a professional poker player!

Her English degree clearly provided a strong grounding for the rigours of her writing career, which has seen her contribute columns to national newspapers and magazines, plus author several books.  Victoria’s commitment to the value of education and to St John’s was evident – not many alumni would take a taxi from Cardiff to Oxford in order to arrive only two hours late for their Gaudy, as she once did!
