St John’s welcomed 90 local primary school pupils across two days, for the annual Primary Science Festivals on 17th and 18th June.

Hosted by the Access Team at SJC, the days included a carousel of three engaging workshops led by the Departments of Materials Science, Maths, and Biology.

In Materials Science, pupils took on the challenge of preventing an egg from cracking after being dropped from the top of the stairs. Their designs, using only paper bags, cotton wool, pipeliners, a cup, and tape, were innovative. Some of the eggs were saved!

Maths came off the page, as pupils were tasked with assembling shapes, using dice to predict outcomes, and ringing bells in a series of games encompassing the Maths Roadshow.

Pupils got up close with insects in Biology, using microscopes to help them identify different species, and draw them in detail. There was plenty of excitement about the insects, but plenty of squealing too…

The groups were accompanied by SJC Student Ambassadors, and enjoyed their lunch break in Kendrew Quad, before heading off for an afternoon lecture down the road at Trinity College.

It was a joy to welcome the participating schools, and great to see so many pupils engaging in university-style learning. We look forward to next time!

Thank you to the teachers and pupils of Wood Farm Primary School, St Barnabas CofE Primary School, St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, and St Francis CofE Primary School for attending.
