Professor John Carey FBA FRSL
Professor Carey was both an undergraduate and graduate student at St John’s. After a Junior Research Fellowship at Balliol College (1959–60), he was a Tutorial Fellow at both Keble College (1960–64) and St John's (1964–75). He was Merton Professor of English Literature from 1976 until 2001.
Professor Carey was a highly respected literary critic and the chief book reviewer for the Sunday Times. He twice chaired the Booker Prize committee (in 1982 and 2003), and chaired the judging panel for the first Man Booker International Prize in 2005.
He was elected as an Honorary Fellow in 1991.
