The refurbishment of the college properties at 19–21 St John Street is now complete, and postgraduates have begun moving into the newly upgraded bedrooms.

Work began early last year on the three late-Georgian, Grade II listed buildings, which previously contained 24 student bedrooms with shared bathrooms and toilets. Both the bedrooms and communal spaces were in need of extensive repair and redecoration.

This project has transformed and successfully modernised the three houses. The outriggers which previously housed the old bathrooms have been removed, with all bedrooms being converted into en suites. A new garden room extension now provides a bright and comfortable common space where students from all three houses can study and relax together. In addition, the kitchens have been fully upgraded and a new laundry room has been built.

Before and after at 19–21 St John Street

The sustainability of the buildings was a crucial consideration in the project. The old gas boilers have been removed and replaced with air-source heat pumps and heat recover systems for heating and hot water. Woodfibre insulation has been added to the internal face of the building, and windows upgraded with secondary glazing throughout. These changes help ensure that the renovated buildings are energy-efficient whilst preserving their historic character.

Congratulations to everyone involved with bringing this challenging project to a successful conclusion, with delivery just in time for the start of a new academic year.
