Sir Chris Wormald KCB (History, 1987) has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service.

Sir Chris is currently Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health and Social Care, and will take up his new role on 16 December.

His appointment as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service marks a significant milestone in his remarkable public service career, which has included leadership positions at the Department for Education and the Cabinet Office. As the most senior civil servant, he will be one of the prime minister’s senior advisers on the working of government and major policy decisions.

Sir Chris expressed his commitment to embracing this "privileged role" and working with leaders across government, to "deliver across the breadth of the country".
