Biography

Before coming to Oxford as Drue Heinz Professor of American Literature, I taught at Harvard and Caltech. I write about American literature from the beginnings to the present and on International Modernist poetry and fiction. I have authored a number of books, including:

  • The Genesis of Ezra Pound’s Cantos;
  • T.S. Eliot: A Study in Character and Style;
  • T.S. Eliot: The Modernist in History
  • Prehistories of the Future: The Primitivist Project and the Culture of Modernism
  • Claiming the Stones / Naming the Bones: Cultural Property and the Negotiation of National and Ethnic Identity
  • The Pisan Cantos of Ezra Pound: A Genetic and Critical Edition (Contract, OUP);

Research Interests

My research interests include American, English, and Continental Modernism (especially Pound, Eliot, Joyce); Poetry; The long poem; Jewish-American literature; Anglo-Italian Literary Relations; Genetic and Textual Criticism
