St John's College will elect up to two non-stipendiary Research Fellows in the Sciences and Mathematics.

The College will elect up to two non-stipendiary Research Fellows in the Sciences and Mathematics. The Fellowships are open to individuals who hold in their own right fixed-term funding without a College attachment in an Oxford University department, the fixed term funding having an initial duration of appointment of not less than four years. Examples of such fixed term independent funding are Royal Society University Research Fellowships, the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship, the Henry Dale Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust/Royal Society, Mid-Career Fellowships from the Research Councils or the Wellcome Trust. The College Fellowship is intended to help support the career development of the Fellow, and to bring distinguished scientists from the University into the College.

The College Research Fellowship is to begin in October 2026 and will be available for up to four years in the first instance (or until the end of the associated fixed term funding, if earlier). At the end of this initial period, if appropriate, the Fellow will be eligible for re-election for one further period of at most four years up to the termination of the original external funding. The Fellow will be entitled to full dining privileges, membership of the Senior Common Room, and access to College facilities, but not membership of the Governing Body or a room in College. There will be an annual research allowance of £3,000.

Research Fellows in Mathematics and the Sciences are expected to engage in the intellectual life of the College. They may serve as graduate advisors and early career mentors, as appropriate to career stage. There is no preference as to subject area within Mathematics and the Sciences, and there is no obligation to teach for the College.

There is no application form. The application should comprise a short CV and a cover letter that includes full details of the applicant’s fixed-term funding, ideally with a weblink to the funding scheme. The letter should also contain the names and contact details of three referees who may be contacted should your application be shortlisted for interview. The cover letter should be accompanied by a one-page lay description of your research, accessible to a non-specialist audience, and a one-page summary suitable for an expert in the field.

Candidates are asked to submit their application materials in the form of a single PDF file, with CV first, to academic.office@sjc.ox.ac.uk. The closing date for receipt of applications is 12 noon GMT on Friday 10th April 2026. Interviews will be held on Wednesday 3rd June 2026.
