Physics at St John’s
St. John’s has an intake of 6 students per year. The teaching for the first 3 years of the course is normally mainly done by two fellows and two lecturers. St. John’s attracts very high calibre students and we ensure that the tutorials are adjusted to be at appropriate level for all our students.
Main duties and responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required:
(i) To provide six hours of tutorial teaching in first- and second-year undergraduate Physics during each week of full term, as directed by the Physics Tutors
(ii) to arrange (and mark) start of term collections for all three years as required;
(iii) to contribute as appropriate to the College’s access and outreach initiatives
Substantive administrative and pastoral leadership will not form part of this part-time role, which is focussed on teaching, but the postholder will work with the College’s Physics tutorial fellows to triage and help deal with any such pastoral (etc) matters that arise during the course of teaching. The postholder may be asked to assist with undergraduate admissions, for which separate payment will be made on an hourly basis.
Remuneration and benefits
The salary will be on the Senior Tutors scale for a six-hour stipendiary lecturer, currently £16,569 - £18,308.
The appointee may have paid by College or reclaim, teaching & scholarship allowance of up to £1,500 p.a. during the course of their appointment, subject to approval in advance by the relevant College Officer. There is an entertainment allowance of £358 p.a. The post will carry some SCR dining privileges, subject to availability. A teaching room, which may be shared, may be provided, subject to availability.
