Introducing a new Committee Member: Leanne Mabena
Growing up, I often felt left out and unsure of how to express the questions I had about myself and the world around me. This included periods, body image, identity, and the pressures that come with being a young woman navigating a changing world. I have experienced discrimination first-hand and see just how much harder women and marginalised individuals often must work to be seen, heard, and valued in the same way.
At first, I thought I was the only one who felt this way but began to realise that many others have similar experiences — and that sense of shared understanding really motivated me to want to make a difference. I believe in creating spaces where no one feels left out, and where people feel truly appreciated, supported, and empowered to keep going, even when things are tough.
That’s why I was so keen to be involved with the Women’s Network and to take on the Women and Gender Equality Officer role. I know that we can’t make every challenge disappear, but I genuinely believe in the power of community — of people coming together to share their stories, uplift one another, and celebrate each other’s wins (big or small).
My aims include to:
- Create Community:
I want to organise a range of events where women and gender minorities can connect, relax, and support one another. For International Women’s Day, I hosted a slumber party–themed event with t-shirt painting, pizza, laughter, and open conversation. It was an evening where people could simply be (see more HERE - link to article below). Kate Molesworth, Chair of the Women’s Network, talked about her life, the challenges she overcame, and the adventures she’s embraced. It was incredibly inspiring and reminded us all to keep pushing forward and fighting for what we care about. She also spoke about the network itself, which many people hadn’t heard of, and it was a great moment to spotlight the brilliant work already happening.
- Connect Communities:
I’d love to strengthen the links between the JCR (undergraduates), MCR (postgraduates), Alumni and different colleges. There’s so much value in bringing together people at different stages of life — we can learn from each other, support one another, and build a richer, more inclusive community.
Next term, I have planned events with the MCR and different colleges. Additionally, please may any alumni who would like to speak and share advice to contact me as we would love to hear from you!
- Improve access to period products:
One of my priorities has also been ensuring that free period products are readily available to students. No one should be held back or made uncomfortable due to lack of access to necessities. I want to ensure that free period products are readily available to all students and have been working on making them readily available.
- Share opportunities:
I try to regularly update people about the various events, schemes, and chances to get involved across Oxford – via both emails and social media.
If there are any events you would like to share, please send it my way and I’ll gladly forward it!
- Encourage Wellbeing:
Oxford can be intense, and it is important to have spaces to unwind and just have fun. Whether it’s creative activities, walks, or chill social events — getting out and connecting with others is so good for our mental health. I also want to encourage people to try new things, step out of their comfort zones, and grow in confidence along the way.

There are lots of events taking place. For events this term, see the term card which is also on @stjohns_femsoc Instagram.

In addition, each week I will be running a gym class during the women-only hours to help encourage more women and minority genders to feel comfortable and confident in the gym. I understand how daunting it can be to start, and I want to create a welcoming space for everyone.
There’s also a run club on Mondays at 6 PM with other girls around Oxford — a great way to meet people and stay active!
I’ll be sending out emails and posting on social media about other events happening throughout the term, so keep an eye out!
