Physics at St John’s

St. John’s has an intake of 6 students per year. The teaching for the first 3 years of the course is normally mainly done by two fellows and two lecturers. St. John’s attracts very high calibre students and we ensure that the tutorials are adjusted to be at appropriate level for all our students.

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required:

(i) To provide six hours of tutorial teaching in first and second year Electromagnetism and Optics and second year Mathematical Methods, during each week of full term, as directed by the Physics Tutors;

(ii) to arrange (and mark) start of term collections for all three years as required;

(iii) to contribute as appropriate to the College’s access and outreach initiatives

Substantive administrative and pastoral leadership will not form part of this part-time role, which is focussed on teaching, but the postholder will work with the College’s Physics tutorial fellows to triage and help deal with any such pastoral (etc) matters that arise during the course of teaching. The postholder may be asked to assist with undergraduate admissions, for which separate payment will be made on an hourly basis.

Selection criteria

The appointee will be able to demonstrate:

(i) an ability to provide a high standard of teaching to very able and challenging undergraduates;

(ii) good communication skills and evidence of the sensitivity required to deal effectively with pastoral duties;

(iii) willingness to take part in Open Days, schools visits and other access and outreach

activities;

Preference may be given to candidates who have, or expect to have completed by 1st October 2025 a doctorate in Physics, but current doctoral candidates will also be considered.

Remuneration and benefits

The salary will be on the Senior Tutors scale for six-hour Stipendiary Lecturer Currently £18,170 per annum.
