Image Requests & Publication Permissions
Imaging Service
Digital images for private study/ research or print/ digital publications may be requested by completing the relevant image order form below. Please read through the following information before submitting an image order request.
Pricing
Copies of available images
Copies of digital images already available in the required quality are made available without charge. Please note that this excludes images from microfilms, as these cannot be produced in-house.
A selection of manuscripts and a few early printed books have been digitized and made available online at Digital Bodleian. Do check if the image(s) you require could be downloaded there.
New images produced on demand
For image requests that require Library staff to undertake photography, the following charges apply:
High-resolution Images: £7.10 per image
- colour TIFF images - 24 bit, 300 dpi
- suitable for private study/ research and print/ digital publication
- images are taken of individual folios/ pages/ features, not of openings
- for higher resolution images, a quote may be provided upon request
- not available for items protected by copyright law
- may exclude entire volumes depending on conservation status
- excludes entire early printed books also held at Bodleian Libraries (of these only images of unique pages/ features, such as bindings, ownership inscriptions, annotations, hand-coloured illustrations etc., may be provided)
Low-resolution Images: £3.05 per image
- colour JPEG images - 24 bit, 72 dpi
- suitable for private study/ research only
- images are taken of individual folios/ pages/ features, not of openings
- excludes entire manuscripts (images from microfilm only)
- excludes entire early printed books also held at Bodleian Libraries (of these only images of unique pages/ features, such as bindings, ownership inscriptions, annotations, hand-coloured illustrations etc., may be provided)
We do not charge an admin fee or minimum charge. All prices include VAT.
Payment Method
Payments may only be made online by card in British Pounds (£). Instructions on how to make a payment will be provided once an image request has been accepted. We are unable to accept any other payment method (which includes card payments over the phone).
Delivery
All images are made available digitally either by email attachment or by providing a link for downloading an individual image or a zip-folder of several images.
Copies of available images
For images already available, a delivery time of 10 working applies from receipt of the image order form and, if applicable, the receipt of all relevant publication permission request forms.
New images produced on demand
For images not yet available, we aim to fulfil image orders within 21 working days at receipt of payment confirmation.

Academic Publications
Please submit the relevant publication permission request form(s):

St John's College does not charge publication fees for academic publications.
If you do not yet have an image of the item in question, you must also submit an image order form.
Commercial Publications
Please email library@sjc.ox.ac.uk in the first instance and describe the envisioned purpose and method of publication together with a description item of which you would like to publish an image (e.g. manuscript number, shelfmark, author-title information, folio / page number).
Copyright Matters
St John's College is not the holder of copyright licences for items in its library collections. The recipient of images of items still protected by copyright is responsible for obtaining copyright permissions from the current copyright holder. The recipient of images is responsible for any copyright infringements they may commit.
By submitting an online image order you confirm that you have read and accepted St John's College's copyright notice.
Please note that the Library reserves the right to refuse supplying images from its collections for any reason.

If you would like to publish images of items in St John’s College’s Special Collections, please submit all relevant forms. This applies to all images of items in St John’s special collections regardless whether the images are supplied by the library, downloaded from Digital Bodleian, or taken by yourself or others.
If you do not yet have the image you would like to publish, you must also submit an image order form (see above).
