College and Alumni News for June 2022

Introduction

We are delighted to announce that, in recognition of President Maggie Snowling’s extraordinary service to St John’s over the last decade, the College has agreed to name a new Tutorial Fellowship in Psychology in her honour.

Maggie Snowling, a distinguished psychologist herself, became the first female President of St John’s in 2012; since her appointment she has led St John’s efforts to promote equality and diversity; modernised the College’s governance; and steered St John’s through the pandemic.

The Snowling Fellowship will be the first in a series of new appointments in Psychology across the University to support the subject’s expansion.  The new post will work alongside St John’s existing Tutorial Fellow in Psychology, Professor Kate Nation, a specialist in reading development.

We are enormously grateful to a number of generous benefactors who between them have committed over two-thirds of the total cost of endowing this new post.  We now seek to raise the outstanding amount – around £400,000 – and would be delighted to hear from alumni who would like to contribute to this.  Please contact us to make a donation to this Fellowship.

Alumni Guest Room Bookings

We have recently changed the way in which alumni can check availability, book and pay for rooms within Alumni House. You can now do this all online, with rooms being confirmed immediately. The new automated system is far more user friendly and can be found on the Alumni Benefits page of our website.

To make a booking, you will need to enter a promotional code to identify yourself as an alumnus/a and this can be found in the monthly e-newsletter.

Research Request

Matthew Ford, Research Assistant to Professor Sir John Kay and Reverend Professor William Whyte, is currently conducting a project on the College's financial and academic history since 1850, and is especially interested in the College's academic ascent in the second half of the twentieth century.

He would be grateful for any alumni memories that speak to that - in particular any recollections, no matter how vague, of how the College compared academically to other Colleges at the time.
