Janine Gibson
Janine Gibson (1990, English Language and Literature) is a journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Buzzfeed UK.
Previously, she was Deputy Editor of Guardian News & Media, Editor-in-Chief of theguardian.com website in London, Editor-in-Chief in New York of Guardian US, Media Correspondent at the Independent, International Editor of Broadcast magazine and Deputy Editor of Televisual.
During her time in New York, Glenn Greenwald brought some of the leaked material from Edward Snowden to Janine’s attention. She liaised with colleagues in London to bring further investigative staff over to New York, including forming the team that met Snowden in Hong Kong to analyse the material he had accumulated. Janine continued to be Glenn Greenwald’s supervising editor during the time he was associated with the Guardian and preparing Snowden’s revelations about NSA surveillance and other stories for publication.
Under Janine’s leadership, Guardian US won the Pulitzer Prize for public service for stories on NSA surveillance. Other distinguished awards include the 2013 Online Journalism Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism and for Watchdog Journalism, as well as AdWeek’s Hottest News site award. In 2012, Guardian US received three prizes for interactives at The Malofiej Awards and first place in the ‘explanatory reporting’ category at the Online Journalism Awards.
Since joining Buzzfeed UK in 2015, Janine and her colleagues have reported on a succession of revealing stories including match-fixing in tennis, the children’s charity scandal at Kids Company and the failings of the National Crime Agency. In April 2018 BuzzFeed UK won news website of the year at the Society of Editors press awards for 2017.
